First Papakura Stream Giveback Day a Success!

Updated: 19 hours ago

The first working bee session at the Waiata Shores Esplanade Reserve saw 16 volunteers giving their all to clearing pest plants like moth plant, field bindweed and woolly nightshade on the banks of the Papakura Stream.

This event is part of the Papakura Stream Halo Project, aiming to help the regenerating native trees along the river banks survive and thrive, improving local biodiversity, water quality and flood resilience .

Over the hour, the team removed 210 moth pods (preventing approx. 168,000 seeds from spreading) and cleared 520 square metres of ground! Check out these before and after pictures below – native trees like tii kouka, kahikatea and maanuka have all been freed thanks to your hard work.

Thank you to all the hardworking volunteers for giving your time and enthusiasm for this important mahi. Thank you also to Manurewa Local Board, Papakura Local Board, Auckland Council Parks, Waiata Shores Residents and Ratepayers, Conifer Grove Residents Association, Totara Heights Bush Guardians and Pest Free South Auckland for your support!
