Papakura Stream Halo Project
What is the Papakura Stream Halo Project?
The Papakura Stream is a 63 km long stretch of water running from Whitford to the Manukau Harbour. Once covered in indigenous kahikatea and pukatea forest, it has seen extensive habitat loss to farming, urbanisation and heavy industry.
While native plantings have been undertaken in more recent years to begin restoring this important habitat for our taonga species, this regeneration is under serious threat from invasive pest plants, which can smother, displace and strangle natives before they can reach maturity. The aim of the halo project is to support the successful regeneration of this stream to full health through strategic, community based weed management.

Why a halo area?
Pest plants are such a threat because they can grow rapidly and spread very quickly. Seeds from pest plants can travel great distances through wind or bird dispersal and remain dormant in the soil years before sprouting. Creating a halo area around the lower stream allows us manage the seed sources of weeds and remove them before they can reinvade the stream margins.
