Tread Lightly Caravan

Mobile Environmental Classroom | Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland

The Tread Lightly Caravan aims to inspire New Zealanders to live more sustainably, by delivering award-winning environmental education to primary and intermediate schools across Auckland.

Our mobile classrooms feature high-impact, interactive exhibits designed to show tamariki and their whaanau that small everyday actions can make a big difference in reducing our environmental footprint.

The Tread Lightly Caravan blends Western science and Maaori knowledge, customs, and protocols. Students make pledges to lower their environmental impact and are encouraged to involve their whaanau in putting these pledges into action.

Since 2007, the Tread Lightly Caravan has visited over 300 Auckland schools and educated more than 80,000 tamariki.

Our Interactive Exhibits

Wymondley Road School Environmental Footprint (1).jpg

My Environmental Footprint

After answering simple questions about their lifestyle, such as what’s in their lunchbox or how they get to school, tamariki find out how many Earths would be needed if everyone used resources the way they do.

Wymondley Road School waste (3).jpg

Waste, Recycling and Litter

Using our specially designed slice-of-waste exhibit, we explore what a landfill is and how we can reduce the amount of waste that ends up there. Tamariki learn about the importance of reducing, re-using and recycling, and get hands-on experience sorting waste into the correct bins.

Energy

Students pedal a real exercycle or wind a hand generator to produce their own electricity, helping them understand how much energy is needed to power common household appliances.

Video Microscope

Students use a video microscope to take a closer look at nature. They learn how these animals support the environment and what we can do to protect them. Each student gets the chance to use the microscope to zoom in and observe their unique features.

Geckos and Vines

Students play a life-sized version of Snakes and Ladders, answering questions about the environment and conservation as they move through the game. It’s a fun and engaging way to build awareness of ecological issues in Aotearoa.

Stormwater

Students explore how our use of water impacts animals and organisms living in streams, with a focus on stormwater, pollution and litter.

E-Waste

Students learn about the environmental impact of a mobile phone’s lifecycle, from production to disposal, as well as other electronics, and how we can reduce their impacts on the environment.

Wymondly Road School Pledges (2).jpg

Tread Lightly Pledge

At the end of the visit, each student has a photo taken with their chosen Tread Lightly pledge, an action they commit to that will make a positive difference for the environment.

Fantastic hands-on activities that kept children engaged for an hour and a half. Highly topical and very important life skills for the children to be learning, showed them how they can make a positive contribution to the world we all live in. Educators were fantastic.
