Paataka Kai

Free community pantry and fridge

At the Beautification Trust, we believe that strong communities are built on the foundation of shared resources and mutual support. That's why we've created the Paataka Kai and Paataka Maatao, or Community Pantry and Fridge. This is an initiative that aims to rescue food and encourage the sharing of kai between neighbours. Our Pātaka Kai operates on the principle of "Give what you can, take what you need," creating a judgment-free zone where neighbours can help each other.

How it works

  • We encourage community members to contribute to the pantry when it's convenient for them, whether by bringing extra produce from their garden or by donating extra goods.

  • The Beautification Trust is also committed to stocking the pantry with donated or grown kai when possible.

  • To help us maintain the quality of the pantry:

    • Leave perishable food items, in the Pātaka Mātao/Fridge.

    • Do not leave waste, old food or clothing items.

  • Take kai as you need, this is a no judgment space.

We want to express a big mihi to Auckland Council's Love Food Hate Waste Fund for their invaluable support in making this initiative a reality.
