About the Event

We invite you to join us for Te Aka Raataa Giveback Day, a volunteer clean up at the beautiful Puhinui Stream. This is a fantastic opportunity to show your aroha for te taiao (environment) and give back to the community.

On this special day, we will not only clean up the Puhinui Stream, but we'll also have the chance to learn from experts about the re-establishment of Maramataka along the awa (stream). We'll get hands-on with tuna (eels), and discover ways we can all help to improve the health of our local waterways.

After all the hard work, we'll share some kai (food) together to celebrate our achievements!

The meeting place is Te Whare Taiao - Trevor Hosken Drive, Wiri. Please note, all volunteers must be signed in by 10am.

What to bring

We'll supply the high vis vests, gloves and tools. All you need to bring is:

  • Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and footwear that you don't mind getting a bit dirty
  • A refillable drink bottle
  • Your community spirit!

Can children participate?

Yes, but children need to be accompanied by their parent/caregiver at all times. We will be working near streams with some steep banks, so we'll do our best to keep families with young children in safer areas.

We're proud to be supported by Eke Panuku and Te Whatu Ora, in partnership with organisations from Te Puhinui Empowered Communities Working Group, including Sustainable Business Network, Te Pu-a-nga Maara, Sustainable Coastlines, Sustainable Schools and Done. This event contributes to the wider kaupapa: Te Whakaoranga o te Puhinui.

Let's come together and make a positive impact on our environment. We look forward to seeing you there!
