Calling all young environmentalists!
Tiaki presents a project-based learning opportunity attracting
schools attention across South Auckland. The core focus of the
kaupapa is to bring together environmental disciplines and new
innovations to develop youth to become community leaders.
Through the Tiaki programme schools are paired with an industry organisation and expert mentor. The organisation is supported by Engineering New Zealand and together with the students they explore a solution for their chosen environmental concerns over Term 2.
Schools are equipped with resources and $1,500 seed funding to get their solution off the ground. Students gain a great insight of working on a real-world project, into these industries and learn more about potential STEM based career options.
In Term 3, students present their projects for judging at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau, where the winners announced will receive ongoing support to explore their solution further or if ready into a ready to use product.
In the past, the Tiaki Expo has hosted 25+ environmental and STEM industry organisations, each with hands-on activities and information about green careers, plus local tertiary education providers.
We've seen exponential growth in the students, teachers and business as they begin to work closely to align pathways for our South Auckland youth.
Tiaki ran successfully for three years and since 2018, we have paused the programme due to funding.
