South Auckland’s streets have become even more vibrant with the addition of eight new Chorus cabinet murals painted by local artists.

The formerly drab, dark green cabinets have been given makeovers as part of the ongoing, nationwide Chorus Cabinet Art programme, which aims to inspire community pride while discouraging graffiti vandalism.

Chorus partnered with local environmental social enterprise, the Beautification Trust, to facilitate the programme and choose the winning artists for South Auckland.

With over 40 entries for the region, the eight winning designs were chosen based on their connections to the local communities, histories and the natural environment.

“The sheer number and high calibre of entries really shows how much artistic talent and passion for the community there is here in South Auckland,” said the Beautification Trust’s Community Manager, Dawn Crispe.

The new artworks can be seen in suburbs across South Auckland, from Howick to Pukekohe. From cheeky cartoon seagulls to depictions of Māori mythology, there’s something to appeal to every art aficionado in the latest batch.

The next round of Chorus Cabinet Art submissions will open from mid-June 2022 at https://www.chorus.co.nz/community/cabinet-art-programme.
